The Anatomy of the Heart

  1. It's a pump which is used to circulate blood around the body
  2. It functions to ensure that enough blood is circulated to meet the varying demands for oxygen, nutrients and the removal of waste products.
  3. The heart muscle is called the myocardium, it is not like other muscles as it is able to function on its own without direct instruction from the brain.
  4. The heart is the size of a closed fist and sits in the centre of your chest.
  5. Its weighs about 300 grams.
  6. The heart is made up of 4 chambers, which form the pump.
  7. The top two chambers are called the atria. The bottom two chambers are called the ventricles.
  8. The Blood enters the heart via the veins. It is then pumped around the body via the arteries which carries rich oxygenated blood around the body
  9. The movement of blood in the heart is controlled by the contraction and relaxing of the heart chambers In a synchronised pattern, first the two atria contract and then the two ventricles.
  10. The valves prevent the back flow of blood.
