The Anatomy of the Heart
- It's a pump which is used to circulate blood around the body
- It functions to ensure that enough blood is circulated to meet the varying demands for oxygen, nutrients and the removal of waste products.
- The heart muscle is called the myocardium, it is not like other muscles as it is able to function on its own without direct instruction from the brain.
- The heart is the size of a closed fist and sits in the centre of your chest.
- Its weighs about 300 grams.
- The heart is made up of 4 chambers, which form the pump.
- The top two chambers are called the atria. The bottom two chambers are called the ventricles.
- The Blood enters the heart via the veins. It is then pumped around the body via the arteries which carries rich oxygenated blood around the body
- The movement of blood in the heart is controlled by the contraction and relaxing of the heart chambers In a synchronised pattern, first the two atria contract and then the two ventricles.
- The valves prevent the back flow of blood.
