Within the UK, 1 in 10 adults are drinking at a harmful level, and many of those do not realise the effects that alcohol can have on the body. Alcohol can cause high blood pressure (hypertension), heart disease, strokes, stomach ulcers, cancer, depression and can contribute to family stress and accidental injuries.
The recommended levels of alcohol consumption are 3-4 units per day for men and 2-3 units per day for women, with at least 2 days per week that are alcohol free. The next page gives details of what a unit of alcohol is, drinking above the recommended limit increases the likelihood of damaging our health. The more a person drinks; the great the risks of experiencing physical or mental health problems, and have a higher risk of becoming alcohol dependent.
